24/7 Response Across New York
New York Biohazard Cleanup
After a death, a crime, or any scene that ordinary cleaning can’t touch, a trained New York crew can make the place safe again — and you don’t have to be the one to do it. A real person answers 844-326-6800 at any hour. We come in unmarked vehicles, work quietly, and carry the whole thing so your family doesn’t have to.
Call 844-326-6800 — 24/7 in New YorkOn Call Bio works across New York — the five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and the Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, Central New York, the Southern Tier, Rochester, Buffalo, and the small towns in between. Our work runs from unattended deaths and suicides to crime scenes, hoarding, blood, and drug residue — the situations no ordinary cleaner will take. Below is what stays constant no matter where in New York you are: how the state handles a death investigation, the rules a cleanup company has to meet here, and the help that exists for the bill.
Does New York’s victim fund pay for crime scene cleanup?
It can. The New York State Office of Victim Services reimburses crime scene cleanup, and the cost of securing the scene, up to $2,500 per claim. That is money the state sets aside so the aftermath of a crime doesn’t land as a second blow on the family, and most people have never heard of it until someone points the way.
One recent change is worth knowing, because it opened the door for more families. As of November 5, 2025, Office of Victim Services dropped an old rule that only someone who actually lived where the crime happened could be reimbursed for the cleanup. Now any eligible person who takes on those reasonable costs can apply — which matters when the person who lived there simply cannot face doing it. The claim runs on documentation, and that part is ours to make easy: we photograph and itemize the work the way the program expects to see it, so your paperwork is not the thing standing between you and the reimbursement. Ask us on the call and we will point you to Office of Victim Services and help you gather what it needs. You can also see every state’s victim compensation fund, compared — fund names, cleanup limits, and application links.
Is a license required for biohazard cleanup in New York?
Not for biohazard cleanup itself. New York does not license trauma-scene or biohazard cleanup as its own trade, the way California and Florida do. So the honest answer is that no state cleanup license exists here — which puts the weight on what standards a company actually meets, because the state is not grading the cleanup work.
Where New York does set real rules is the waste and the workers. The regulated medical waste a cleanup produces is co-governed by the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health; off-site transport requires a DEC permit under 6 NYCRR Part 364, and only permitted transporters may haul it. And underneath all of it is the federal OSHA bloodborne pathogen standard, which dictates how blood and body fluids are handled to keep the crew safe. We meet the whole stack — DEC-permitted medical waste transport, OSHA methods on the scene, and verification before we call a space clean. One New York wrinkle to note, because it surprises people: the state does license mold work separately, and we cover that below.
In New York, does a coroner or a medical examiner release the scene?
Depends on your county, because New York uses both. Some counties elect a coroner; others appoint a medical examiner; and New York City runs a centralized Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Whichever your county has, that official has jurisdiction over violent, suspicious, unattended, or unexplained deaths — they respond to the scene, investigate, and release the person to the funeral director your family chooses.
Here is the part that catches families off guard. Once the coroner or medical examiner finishes and the scene is released, cleaning the property belongs to the family or the owner — not the county, not the city, not the state. The officials handle the death and the person; what is left in the room is not theirs to restore. It is, though, exactly what we do, and it starts with one call to 844-326-6800.
What a Call Sets in Motion
- You speak to a person immediately — no phone tree, day or night.
- We take down what you can tell us, lay out the process plainly, and send a crew — most of New York gets same-day arrival.
- We document everything for your insurance claim and can bill your carrier directly.
- The scene is returned to a safe, livable condition — meeting OSHA and EPA standards.
Property Restoration in New York
Biohazard and trauma work is our core, but the same crews handle the property emergencies that often come with it. If water, fire, or a storm damaged the home, we do water damage restoration, fire damage restoration, and storm and flood damage restoration — fast extraction, drying, board-up, and cleanup, documented for your claim. Sewage backups are handled as the health hazard they are through our sewage cleanup service.
Mold in New York carries a rule most states don’t have, and it’s worth getting right. Under Labor Law Article 32, any mold remediation of ten square feet or more must be performed by a contractor holding a New York State mold remediation license, and the law even requires that mold assessment and mold remediation be done by different licensed parties. It is genuinely unlawful for a company to advertise or perform mold remediation here without that license. On Call Bio holds the New York State mold remediation license, so the mold side of a job is handled the way Article 32 requires — by a licensed contractor. The requirement exists to protect you, and you should use it: ask any company at your door for its mold license in writing, ours included, and you’ll have ours before work begins.
The Documents You’ll Need
In the stretch right after a death, the paperwork piles up, and the estate and the insurers want some of it almost immediately. Death certificates in New York come from one of two places, depending on where the death occurred: for a death in New York City, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; for a death anywhere else in the state, the New York State Department of Health. The fee differs too — $15 per certified copy for a New York City death, $30 per copy for a death elsewhere in the state. Order several at once, since banks, insurers, and the county each tend to want their own.
Requesting them is yours to do, but we’ll tell you who usually asks for what, and we hand you a documented cleanup record shaped to satisfy Office of Victim Services and your insurer — so a missing page never stalls the claim.
What to Do Until We Get There
- Leave everything in the room where it sits, and keep kids and pets out of that part of the house.
- Please don’t try to clean blood or body fluids yourself — the health risk is real, and no family member should have to.
- If the county’s official is still involved, let the scene be released before anyone steps back inside.
- Find your homeowners’ or renters’ policy if you can; if you can’t, running down coverage is part of what we do.
- When the certificates are available, order a small stack rather than a single copy.
Kept Quiet, All Across the State
Nothing on our vehicles names a company or hints at what the work is. What a neighbor sees is a plain van and people carrying containers — a scene that could be almost anything. No one on your block learns why we came, whether that’s a walk-up in Brooklyn, a house on Long Island, or a quiet road upstate. The crew gears up out of sight, waste leaves in unmarked packaging, and if a certain hour of the day keeps things calmer where you live, tell us and we’ll arrive then.
Questions New York Families Ask
What will it cost?
It comes down to how far the damage reached — a single contained room is modest, while a scene that spread or went undiscovered for a while runs higher. The written price comes after we walk the property and before we lift a finger, and it’s the number you’ll pay. Once homeowners’ insurance and the Office of Victim Services benefit are counted in, many New York families end up owing little or nothing themselves. If insurance doesn’t cover everything, financing plans can help with unexpected costs.
How soon can a crew be there?
The line is staffed every hour of every day, and most of New York can expect a crew the same day it calls. If the county official hasn’t cleared the scene, phone in regardless — we get the crew prepped so it can leave the instant that clearance lands.
Do you cover upstate and the city both?
Yes — the entire state, from the five boroughs up to the North Country. Give the address to whoever answers and they’ll give you a straight timing estimate for exactly where you are. Every corner of it comes back to one number: 844-326-6800.
Will anyone realize we hired someone?
No. Plain vehicles, nothing branded worn outside, not a sign anywhere. By the time we drive off, the space looks like any other room in the home — with no hint of the work we did or why it was needed.
