24/7 Response Across Illinois
Illinois Biohazard Cleanup
When something terrible happens in an Illinois home or business, the cleanup can go to a crew that does exactly this, every day — so your family doesn’t have to. A real person answers 844-326-6800 at any hour of any day. Our vehicles are unmarked, our work is quiet, and we handle it so your family doesn’t have to.
Call 844-326-6800 — 24/7 in IllinoisFrom Chicago and the Cook County suburbs to Rockford, Peoria, Springfield, the Metro East, and the farm towns downstate, On Call Bio covers all of Illinois. The work includes unattended deaths, suicides, crime scenes, hoarding, blood spills, and drug residue. What follows is the ground truth for the whole state: how Illinois investigates a death, what the state actually requires of a cleanup company, and where the money for cleanup can come from.
Can the Illinois Attorney General’s victim program cover cleanup costs?
Yes. Crime scene cleanup is a listed expense under the Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Program, which the Attorney General’s office runs under the Crime Victims Compensation Act. There’s no separate cap published for cleanup — it sits inside the program’s overall maximum of $45,000 for crimes on or after August 7, 2022 ($27,000 for earlier crimes). Replacement of damaged property isn’t included, but the cleaning itself is. Illinois families lean on our crime scene cleaners alongside the CVC program.
Qualifying has firm rules and short clocks. Law enforcement must be notified within 72 hours of the crime — seven days for sexual assault or human trafficking — the application must be filed within five years, and the claimant has to cooperate with police and prosecutors. It’s also a payer of last resort: insurance and every other source gets applied before the program pays. The whole claim rests on documentation, which is where we carry our share — every Illinois job leaves our hands with the itemized record the program’s reviewers ask for. Call the Crime Victims Assistance Line at 1-800-228-3368 or apply through the Attorney General’s site; ask us anything about the paperwork when you call us.
If insurance doesn’t cover everything, flexible financing is available for large cleanups. Illinois is one of the more generous programs — the full 50-state comparison shows where each state lands.
Do biohazard cleanup companies need a license in Illinois?
No. Illinois has no license for biohazard or trauma-scene cleanup as a trade — no state accreditation, no registry, no board. Any company implying the state certifies this work is describing something that doesn’t exist, so the questions you ask a company are the only vetting that happens.
What Illinois does police, firmly, is the waste. The Illinois EPA treats what leaves a trauma scene as potentially infectious medical waste — PIMW — and hauling it commercially takes an annual Illinois EPA permit, a manifest for every single pickup, enclosed and secured vehicle compartments, and delivery only to a facility the agency has permitted to treat or transfer it. The crew itself works under the federal OSHA bloodborne pathogen standard. We meet the whole chain — permitted hauling, manifested waste, OSHA methods — and we exceed federal OSHA and EPA standards on every job. The state may not license the trade, but the trail the waste leaves is fully regulated, and ours is airtight.
Does Illinois use coroners or medical examiners?
Coroners — with one big exception. Every Illinois county elects a coroner except Cook County, which voted its coroner’s office out and has run the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office since December 1976. It remains the only medical examiner system in the state and covers roughly 45% of Illinois’s population. Whichever office your county has, it investigates deaths that are violent, sudden and unexpected, suspicious, or unattended.
What families rarely hear in advance: once the coroner or Medical Examiner finishes with the scene and law enforcement clears it, the property comes back to you exactly as the investigation left it. No county sends cleaners, and no state office pays a crew to come — the room is the family’s or the owner’s to deal with. Dealing with it is our whole business. Call 844-326-6800 and it’s handled. Our crews handle cleanup after an unattended death throughout Illinois.
What Happens When You Call
- You speak to a person immediately — no phone tree, day or night.
- We listen, walk you through what the work involves, and dispatch a crew — same-day across most of Illinois.
- We document everything for your insurance claim and can bill your carrier directly.
- The scene is returned to a safe, livable condition — meeting OSHA and EPA standards.
Getting the Death Certificate Handled
Estates, banks, and insurers each want a certified death certificate, and in Illinois there are two doors to get one. The Illinois Department of Public Health’s Division of Vital Records issues them for $19, with extra copies of the same record at $4 apiece when ordered together — but mailed requests to IDPH can take around 12 weeks. The county clerk’s office in the county where the death occurred issues the same certified copies and is usually far quicker, which matters when an insurer is waiting on one. Either way, bring an unexpired government photo ID and order several copies at once.
The certificates are your errand; the cleanup record is ours. We hand you documentation built for the Crime Victims Compensation reviewers and your insurance adjuster, so nothing you file gets bounced for a missing detail.
Until the Crew Pulls Up
- Shut the door on that room and keep children and pets well away from it.
- Leave blood and body fluids alone — cleaning them is genuinely hazardous and never a family’s job.
- If the coroner or Medical Examiner still holds the scene, wait for their release before anything else happens.
- Find your homeowners’ or renters’ policy if it’s handy; if it isn’t, we’ll chase down the coverage with you.
- Plan to order a batch of death certificates rather than one — every institution wants its own.
Nothing for the Neighbors to Notice
Nothing on our vehicles names a company or hints at biohazard work. What the street sees is a plain van and people carrying containers — a scene that could be almost anything. That’s as true on a Chicago block where the houses nearly touch as it is on a county road where the nearest neighbor is a field away. Suits go on indoors, what we remove leaves in unremarkable packaging, and if a quieter hour suits your street better, that’s the hour we’ll come.
From the Lake to the Ohio River, One Number
The calls vary enormously. A parent found days after dying alone, with the room no longer safe to enter. A suicide a family should never have to see the evidence of. A crime scene handed back by detectives. A house that hoarding has made dangerous. Blood from a fall, an accident, a medical crisis. Residue from drug activity that only testing can prove is gone. All of it comes through the same line, and all of it is work we do. It’s the same biohazard cleanup we deliver nationwide. That includes compassionate suicide cleanup anywhere in the state.
You don’t need the technical term before you dial. Say what happened in your own words — “my uncle wasn’t found for a week,” “the police just left,” “we opened the house and can’t go in” — and the person answering will know what crew and gear to send. One number exists so you never have to figure out the category yourself. Just across the border, we cover Wisconsin too.
What Illinois Families Want to Know
How much does it run?
Scope decides it. Contamination caught early in one room is a modest job; fluids that sat for weeks or traveled through flooring are a bigger one. After we assess, you get the number in writing before work starts, and it holds. With homeowners’ insurance applied first and the Crime Victims Compensation Program behind it for eligible crimes, many Illinois families pay little or nothing themselves.
When can you be here?
The line is answered around the clock, every day, and most Illinois addresses get a crew the same day. If the coroner or Medical Examiner hasn’t released the scene yet, call anyway — we’ll have everything staged so work begins the moment the release lands.
Is my town actually in your coverage?
Yes — the whole state, all 102 counties, city and rural alike. Give dispatch your address and you’ll hear real timing for your location, not a guess. Families just over the state line reach us in Minnesota too. It starts at 844-326-6800.
Could the neighbors work out why you came?
Not through anything we do. Unmarked vehicles, no branded gear worn outside, plain packaging on everything we carry out. The house we leave behind says nothing about what happened inside it.
